Rules of the Cup

The Official Rules of Lord Stanley and Ollie's Cup.
  1. The competition for the Lord Stanley and Ollie Cup (henceforth referred to as "the Cup") will be held yearly at the Groth family Christmas celebration.

    • The host of the celebration decides when and where in the course of the celebration the competition occurs.

    • Participants must be present to compete for the Cup. (Substitutions for illness)

  2. Eligibility

    • Anyone who is a descendant of Paul and Alice Groth is eligible to compete.

    • Children eligible when they can lift the Cup by themselves?

    • Significant others rule?

    • Previous Cup winner are ineligible for X years?

  3. Brackets

    • After the host has decided the time and location of the competition, the Cup committee will determine the tournament brackets based on eligibility.

    • Head to head play, Single elimination

    • The seeding for the tournament will be determined in order of youngest to oldest. Great-grandchildren got byes in 2009, but then went oldest to youngest ???

    • If number of participants are not, 16,32, or 64 then byes will be given to the top seeds.

  4. Game Play

    • Participants will roll two dice each.

    • The top seed has the choice to roll first or last.

    • High score wins the roll.

    • All rounds are best of 3 rolls wins the game, except the Championship Game which is best of 5 rolls.

    • Referees will judge if the roll is a good roll. A bad roll results in a re-roll for that participant.

    • Dice landing off the playing surface is a bad roll.

    • If the referee determines the participant rolling or the dice was interfered with, the referee can declare a bad roll.

    • Victory dances are encouraged.

  5. Lord Stanley and Ollie Cup

    • The Cup shall be on display from the beginning of the competition near the playing surface.

    • Until the championship is decided, only the Cup's previous winner, the host, and the Cup committee are allowed to touch the Cup.

    • Pictures with the Cup are encouraged. (Just no touching.)

    • When the Cup is handled, white gloves are required.

    • The Cup is presented to the tournament winner in an elaborate ceremony with the previous winner passing the trophy to new winner.

    • The Cup is to be displayed somewhere in public sight year round by the winner.

    • Photographic evidence of the Cup's display must be made available to the Cup committee so they can distribute them to the rest of the family.

    • Winning the Cup requires the winner to attend the following year's Groth Family Christmas celebration so that the Cup can be passed on to the next winner.


  6. Stanley and Ollie Cup Committee

    • The Stanley and Ollie Cup Committee (referred to henceforth as the "Cup Committee for Competition and Presentation", or CCCP for short) shall be the ruling body on all matters involving the Cup.

    • Members of the CCCP must show great dedication and respect for the Cup as they are considered the guardians of the Cup and its legacy throughout the year.

    • During the competition, members of the CCCP are charged with the tasks of creating the tournament seedings and bracket.

    • An offense to a committee member could seriously impact an individual's seeding in the tournament. So, be nice to CCCP members.

    • One CCCP member will be the tournament referee.

    • One CCCP member will be the scorekeeper.

    • One CCCP member will be in charge of making sure the players up next are nearby so the competition moves quickly.

    • Any controversies that arise during competition will result in a private meeting of the CCCP. Their ruling is final.

    • Complaints about the CCCP is considered mutiny and is punishable by death.
